Keyboarding Expectations and Resources
Higher Standards Require an Increase in Keyboarding Skills
Technology and keyboarding expectations have increased due to the Common Core State Standards. According to the English/Language Arts standards, by the end of grades 2, 3, and 4, students will be expected to:
- Grade 2: With guidance and support from adults, use a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing, including in collaboration with peers.
- Grade 3: With guidance and support from adults, use technology to produce and publish writing (using keyboarding skills) as well as to interact and collaborate with others.
- Grade 4: With some guidance and support from adults, use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others; demonstrate sufficient command of keyboarding skills to type a minimum of one page in a single sitting.

* As a general rule, keyboarding speeds should be measured as “5 words per minute (wpm) x grade level” (WI DPI recommendation).
Resources
Students in second and fourth grades utilize Typing Club to practice their touch keyboarding skills and take typing tests each marking period. Students are also encouraged to practice at home and to utilize the following sites as they work towards increasing their typing speed and accuracy.
